Executive Function Coaching for Teenagers

Is your teenager capable, but finding school overwhelming?

Being a teenager is hard. It feels even more difficult when the part of your brain responsible for organising, focusing, and planning is still developing. Between exams, social pressure, changing hormones, and the sudden expectation to be independent, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. When that happens, study skills and

organisation are usually the first things to slip.

We offer straightforward strategies and support to deal with the heavy stuff, so they can get back to enjoying being a teenager.

Is your teenager struggling to manage school?

Struggles might start showing up in little ways. A messy bedroom spirals into forgetting what they need to pack for school. They might need constant reminders about homework, deadlines, or what to revise. Or maybe they seem easily distracted or quick to anger when you ask them to do a seemingly simple task. You know they’re capable, and it probably feels frustrating that they’re not managing it on their own.

Lots of parents put it down to teenage rebellion, or even laziness. But that’s rarely the case. Often, it’s because secondary students are struggling to cope with the demands of school and all the changes they’re going through.

These things can be clues that your teenager might need some extra support with executive functioning.

What can executive function coaching help with?

"You've been such a big help to me in executive function. I was finding this difficult then this really helped mer sort out my tyrong and weak points. I honestly don't think I'd have managed as well without you". Year 9 student.

Many teenagers can benefit from executive support. It’s about building core mental skills like starting and completing tasks, planning, regulating emotions, staying focused, or prioritising what you need to do.

Most of the time, knowing what to do isn’t the problem - it’s feeling stuck starting. For teenagers, the prefrontal cortex of the brain is still developing, and that’s the part which helps to manage day-to-day chaos, big emotions, and figuring out what to do first.

This part of the brain doesn’t actually finish developing until our mid-20s, meaning there’s a scientific reason why your teenager might lose track of time or put things off. Executive functioning support gives them extra tools while their brain makes sense of it all.

Does my teenager need to have ADHD to benefit from coaching?

Absolutely not. While ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) can make these challenges more obvious, executive function difficulties can impact teenagers for all kinds of reasons.

The increasing demands of GCSEs, schoolwork, and growing independence can reveal challenges that might not have been obvious before. Many teenagers will struggle with these things at some point. Our job is arming them with the practical tools to help.

Could your teenager benefit from support?

If you feel like you’re constantly having to remind your child about homework, or revision brings up arguments, coaching can help teenagers develop skills and agency over their own learning. Your teenager might benefit from executive coaching if you notice they:

  • Struggle to get started

  • Procrastinate even when something is important

  • Find revision overwhelming

  • Struggle to break large tasks into manageable steps

  • Underestimate how long things will take

  • Forget deadlines or equipment

  • Struggle to decide what to do first

  • Rely on you to organise them

  • Lose track of what they’re supposed to be doing

  • Become frustrated when things don’t go to plan

  • Know what they should do but struggle to actually do it

GCSE Exam Support

GCSEs can feel like a really big deal to your teenager. While they might seem like a distant memory to many of us, for them, it can feel like their whole world in the moment. Pressure to succeed, the need to self-organise, and the heavy cognitive demands of exam season can bring executive challenges to the surface.

The key to GCSE success isn’t just about knowing the subjects; it’s also about managing the demands of revision. And that’s where executive function coaching for teenagers can be invaluable.

These are the skills which can help them create realistic revision plans, decide what to look at, break things into manageable chunks, and get the ball rolling to start off with. It also avoids last-minute panic revision sessions. A large part of making things feel easier is managing time more effectively and adapting when things don’t go to plan.

All of these skills build independence, helping teenagers feel more confident tackling GCSE revision on their own. You can relax knowing they’ve got this, and they can relax knowing you’re not going to be on their case about studying.

What does coaching look like?

On our initial insight call, we identify what’s holding your teenager back. We break those challenges down and match them with the right strategies. Then, we work on those skills together, keep practising them until they stick, and review what’s working well.

Our goal is for your teenager to finish those sessions with a toolkit of transferable executive skills. The aim isn’t to organise them forever, but to give them strategies they can use in their exams, as well as in all kinds of other life situations.

Over time, they’ll move from thinking “My parents always tell me what I need to do” to “I can work out what I need to do and how to get started.”
